Step 1:
Read through "The Tell-Tale Heart." Share your initial thoughts and discuss what happened in the story. What kind of narrator is this? (First-person or Third? Reliable or Unreliable?). Fill out the chart at the end of the story with any important evidence for his madness or his sanity. |

|
Step 2:
Here you are introduced to your project. Read through the plan, the expectations, and the grading criteria. May the odds be ever in your favour! |
Step 3:
You're a lawyer now. Research the specifics of the Insanity Plea to help you prepare for the case. |

Step 4:
To boost your understanding of mental illnesses, we will research some specific ones in order to compare them to the narrator's testimony. |
Step 5:
Now we form our teams: Prosecution and Defense. Meet with your group and share your info. Decide what your plan of action is for the trial, prepare your Opening Statements, and choose what questions you will ask the witnesses. (Remember that all questions/evidence you use in court must align with the story, and will be previewed ahead of time by Mr. Duncan.) |
|
|
Step 6:
TRIAL!! Each side will deliver their Opening Statements, question the witnesses, and deliver their Closing Statements. Remember to jot down the opponents' arguments so that you can refute them! Afterward, our judge, the Honourable Lord Duncan, shall deliver his verdict. |
Step 7:
You are now the judge of this case, write me a page-long verdict explaining your findings. Make sure to reference the Story (with a quote), your legal research, your mental illness research, and the trial itself. |
