Lesson 3:
1. Video-- "Weird Weapons and Equipment of WWI" 2. WWI Arms Auction Game-- Mr. Duncan will separate the class into 6 groups (Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy). Each group will be assigned $100,000 imaginary dollars with which to equip their army. Mr. Duncan will then play the role of auctioneer, going through a slideshow of WWI Weapons and Equipment and giving a brief sales pitch for each item. In their own groups, each nation will fill out the sheet with the names of the weapons, provide it a rating out of 10, and decide with their open bids (and highest bids) will be based on their amount of money and how useful they think each item will be. |

Lesson 5:
1. Poster Presentations-- Students polish up and present their posters on 6 of the key nations in WWI. 2. Video-- "Battle of the Nek" (1:34-5:18). Let's take a look this reenactment of a battle during the harrowing Gallipoli Campaign showing the futile and unnecessary slaughter of British, Indian, Australian, and New Zealand troops. Afterwards, we will discuss the question: "Even though they were facing a certain and pointless death, what kept these men going over the top?" 3. Powerpoint/Lecture: 1915-- a brief overview of two key battles of 1915, Gallipoli and the 2nd Battle of Ypres--two battles that shocked the world. 4. Gas Drills-- Stay on your toes! To keep us in the mindset of the First World War experience, we will be beginning our gas drills. Using the bandanas/cloth items the students brought as makeshift air filters, we will be reenacting the experience of the Canadians at Ypres. When Mr. Duncan yells "Gas, Gas, Gas!" you'd better reach for your gas mask, and be hasty about it! 4. Video-- "Gas on the Western Front." Let's take a closer look at Ypres--where poison gas was used for the first time. Canadians were noted for their courageous performance in this battle, but at what cost? Afterwards, we'll go over the accompanying question sheet as a class |

4. To start next class, we will watch the video "The Treaty of Versailles in 1918 (sic) and its Consequences." What were the weaknesses of this Treaty? In what ways did it lead to--or at least allow for--the Second World War, and how could it have been different?
